Disturbed Blanche DuBois movesin with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutishbrother-in-law while her reality crumbles around her. Set in the French Quarterof New Orleans during the restless years following World War Two, A STREETCAR NAMEDDESIRE is the story of Blanche DuBois, a fragile and neurotic woman on adesperate prowl for someplace in the world to call her own. After being exiledfrom her hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, for seducing a seventeen-year-old boyat the school where she taught English, Blanche explains her unexpectedappearance on Stanley and Stellas (Blanches sister) doorstep as nervousexhaustion. This, she claims, is the result of a series of financial calamitieswhich have recently claimed the family plantation, Belle Reve. Suspicious,Stanley points out that "under Louisianas Napoleonic code what belongs tothe wife belongs to the husband." Stanley, a sinewy and brutish man, is asterritorial as a panther. He tells Blanche he doesnt like to be swindled anddemands to see the bill of sale. This encounter defines Stanley and Blanchesrelationship. They are opposing camps and Stella is caught in no-mans-land.But Stanley and Stella are deeply in love. Blanches efforts to impose herselfbetween them only enrages the animal inside Stanley. When Mitch -- acard-playing buddy of Stanleys -- arrives on the scene, Blanche begins to seea way out of her predicament. Mitch, himself alone in the world, reveresBlanche as a beautiful and refined woman. Yet, as rumors of Blanches past inAuriol begin to catch up to her, her circumstances become unbearable.
