The watch movement has been serviced. A typical service consists of completely stripping the watch down, cleaning in an ultrasonic bath and all jewels and pivot holes cleaned with peg wood. It is then inspected and any worn or damaged parts are replaced, the main spring is removed cleaned and oiled, if worn or set it will be replaced, if this is the case it will be stated, the movement is then reassembled oiled and adjusted.
I spend many hours working on these watches to ensure they are running at their best, a service such as this could cost £150 or more if you were to pay for it.
The watch as seen in the photos comes with a free presentation box and a complimentary watch chain.
The watch is running with a true and flat balance motion with good amplitude in all positions. The balance is a cut compensating bimetallic balance with a blued over coil Breguet type hair spring, with screwed in weights in the balance rim and mean time adjusting screws in the balance arms, the watch is keeping excellent time having been tested over a couple of weeks and time keeping is to a few seconds a day, please note a mechanical watch will not keep time as a quartz watch will. The movement is in a nickel finish with beautiful wavy line damascening on the bridge plates with bright steel crown and ratchet wheels, all the black inlay paint is intact. It has a patent style regulator for fine adjustment of the time. which is central on the balance cock just where it should be. A very nice looking movement.
The dial is in glass enamel and is double sunk at the centre and 6 oclock position, it has Waltham USA written in script underneath the winged wheel, which I believe is the trademark of Thomas Russell of Liverpool, there is also marked on the inside of the rearcover of the case the Russell model the dial is in Roman numerals, there is a minute track in the outer chapter and the sub seconds at the 6 oclock position. The dial has a very small mark or could be a fault at manufacture as these dials are not always perfect in the centre of the sub seconds dial just below the seconds hand it is quite difficult to see, other than this the dial is unmarked. it is in excellent condition.
The hands are a matched set in blued steel, they are very fine slim hands of the spade and whip style and are also in excellent condition.
The case is made by the Illinois watch case co, it is gold filled guaranteed for 10 years from new, the case is heavily die engraved on the body of the case and is in excellent condition, the front bezel is of the snap on style the two rear covers open on very good hinges and close down tight, on the inside of the rear cover it is marked the Russell model so it appears that this watch was made as a private label watch for Thomas Russell of Liverpool, I believe they used various suppliers. The crown winds the watch and raises to set the time and functions as it should, the bow is taut and holds position. There are no gouges, scratches dents, or marks on the case and no wear through of the gold on the case at all. A very elegant and imposing case.
The mineral glass crystal is unmarked not a scratch or chip that I can see.
I try to give an honest and accurate description, please look at the photos as they form part of it.
This is an antique, it has been used and cherished, please keep this in mind, it is not new.
