Painting by Peter Oliver on found driftwood, in its original glazed honey oak frame, with a label for the Anthony Hepworth Gallery verso. This is a small painting, measuring 29cms approx, and 3.5 cms deep. The Tate Gallery has some of this artists work, and there is plenty of information about him online.
Peter Oliver (1927–2006)
Circa 1990 - There was a 1999 Anthony Hepworth Bath exhibition which included these Breton boat & landscape paintings. The boards are drift pieces found on the Bay of Audierne, known as the “Long Beach” by Peter. The skeletal old boats were painted mostly at Le Guilvinec
This piece was saved in 2019 after the death of Aileen, Peter's wife. The entire collection of oils was stored in a small stone barn at the Bath house since 1980

The painting is in excellent condition, with a little light foxing to the backing board- this does not seriously detract in my view. There is a narrow split across the wood panel which looks to be original - in places some of the red paint has gone into the crack, and elsewhere has bridged it, but the paint itself is not cracked. There is slight varnish loss to the frame, which I have tried to show. Apologies for the reflections in the photos.
Prices for similar works by this artist range from £450 to £600 on the Studio Cennan website, so this piece is a real bargain.
